Horse whisperer coming to Rupert

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 5:50 PM CDT

RUPERT, Idaho - Ray Hunt, inspiration for the movie and book “The Horse Whisperer,” will lead clinics at a new horse arena in Rupert Sept 20, 21,and 22. He will be at the Dancing Star Ranch to give a colt starting class and a riding class

Hunt is one of the most renowned horse trainers in the world and, by all accounts, is a legend in his own time. “The Horse Whisperer” was based on his work with horses, as well as his student Buck Brannaman and the late Tom Dorrance. He has inspired many great natural horsemen, including John Lyons and Pat Parelli.

Colt Starting

The colt class is for unstarted horses, problem or troubled horses that might have missed some basics. Stallions are accepted in this class. Horses are started in a halter and advanced to a bosal or snaffle bit. A saddle and pad is needed to be available for the first saddling. An older saddle is advised for this class, as all horses are saddled and turned loose and moved in the arena to get uses to carrying a saddle. Cost is $500 for one horse and rider. If the owner is someone other than the rider, he will be required to pay an audit fee of $30 per day. This class starts at 9 a.m. each morning.

Horsemanship

The horsemanship class is for horses that have been ridden. This class is for riders who wish to advance their horsemanship skills. The horses will all be asked to walk, trot and canter. The tack required for this class can be either English or Western, and the rider should ride the horse in whatever headgear he have been using. Hunt may make suggested tack changes after the first day.

Hunt does not teach a particular style of riding but teaches horsemanship. Riders are instructed in methods for getting their horses to mentally and physically turn loose. Horse and rider attain a physical and mental harmony using flexing exercises. The fee for this class is $500 for one horse and rider. If the horse owner is someone other than the rider, he will be required to pay an audit fee of $30 per day.

There is a $10 arena fee per class. Boarding is available at an additional fee.

A $200 deposit is required to reserve a place in one of the clinics.
