2008 Salmon Stampede royalty selected
SALMON, Idaho - Fifteen young ladies competed in the Salmon Stampede Rodeo Queen Contest on July 2 at the Lemhi County Fairgrounds, demonstrating their horsemanship skills by performing a reining pattern and “buzzing” the arena to show off their royalty wave and galloping around the arena for a flag presentation.
There were three age divisions: Queen, 14 to 18; Princess, 11 to 13; and Sweetheart, 8 to 10.
The new reigning royalty are: Queen Katey Gutman, first runner-up Morgin Younger; Princess BreAnna Olson, first runner-up Kaylaa Gutman; and Sweetheart Bailee Burgess, First Runner-up Shana Olson.
The three judges asked each contestant various questions to highlight their horsemanship and rodeo knowledge. The contest then moved to the Carmen Heritage Hall where the young ladies did their modeling pattern, prepared speech and answered an impromptu question.
According to contest coordinator Katie Hoffman, this year’s was perhaps the largest turnout of contestants the contest has had in several years.
The 2008 Salmon Stampede Royalty and will represent the Salmon Stampede Rodeo, which will be held at the Lemhi County Fairgrounds Aug. 22 and 23. Aside from helping to promote the rodeo and appear in the Grand Entry, they will also be helping promote the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” campaign during the rodeo to benefit breast cancer research.
